President’s Letter

March 30, 2004

The year end for our chapter is winding down as we approach May 31. This has been an exciting year so far with these highlights:

  • The Florida West Coast Chapter has achieved Gold status for the 11th straight year.
  • A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to a USF student and two more will be awarded in April.
  • We hosted the November CIA exam and will be hosting the May exam as well.
  • A successful student social was held in February following our 3rd seminar.
  • We held our first governmental seminar in February jointly with the Southwest Florida Chapter.
  • Our chapter has nominated Dr. Terry Engle, Co-Chair of the Academic Relations Committee, for the coveted IIA Leon R. Radde Educator of the Year Award. If he is selected, he will be attending the International IIA Conference in Sidney Australia this June.

The next seminar will be Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa. This promises to be the most exciting training we have had this year. We will have the annual awards banquet immediately following the seminar. It will be an outside affair (weather permitting) with heavy hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to mingle with each other. Make plans to attend and invite your significant other. Be sure to register in advance at the website so that we know you are coming. This way we can have your name tag and CPE certificate ready.

Just a reminder. Please let me know when you make a presentation to a group on an audit or accounting related subject. Our chapter gets one CAP point for each CPE hour. This also applies to articles submitted to professional journals.

You will able to vote for next year’s slate of officers electronically this year for the first time. Bob McCall, our Vice President of Communications, has done an outstanding job in upgrading and maintaining our website, electronic newsletters, and now developing an electronic ballot. Thanks to Bob for a job well done!

As you can see, your local chapter is doing its best to meet the training and professional development needs of its members. As always, your help is needed and would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in serving on a committee, helping out at a single event, etc, then simply contact any of the officers or committee chairs.

We look forward to seeing you at the April seminar.

Billy Weathers
2003-2004 Chapter President

West Florida ISACA Invitation

Unix Audit & Security One-Day Workshop

I have found a good/low cost Unix Audit & Security course, and am eager to find others who are interested in attending.

I would like to arrange this workshop if there is enough interest in the Tampa Bay area. We would need approx. 15-20 persons to cover costs. Most UNIX courses are 3-4-5 days in length and cost from $2,500 -3,000, plus travel and hotel expenses. We have an opportunity to get a good UNIX Security & Audit workshop, locally, at 1/10th the cost! The course is - Unix Security & Audit One-day workshop - to be offered in Tampa in late spring/early summer, for approx. $250-$300 per person.

Here is an abstract of the seminar:

This seminar will provide a detailed discussion of the audit and security issues related to the use of the Unix Operating Systems and TCP/IP services that are hosted on these systems. Differences in major Unix variants will be addressed including Solaris, AIX and HP-UX. A live Unix operating system environment will be used to demonstrate key security features and audit tests. Participants will be provided with an audit checklist and sample audit scripts.

If you are interested in attending this Unix course, please send me an e-mail : Abatec@Hillsclerk.com and let me know. You may forward this message to any one you think may also be interested in this one day seminar. If I receive enough responses of interest, I will proceed to schedule this workshop.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me,

Cheryl A. Abate
